What is the Outrigger Challenge Cup?

The Outrigger Challenge Cup is a tournament, founded and administered by the Marshall Islands Soccer Federation, as a means of providing competitive matches for our teams across all forms of soccer.

The outrigger canoe has been used by Marshallese people, and many island populations around the world for thousands of years, as a means to navigate the oceans. Where in the past the outrigger has brought people together, allowing for the exchange of culture, in 2025 the outrigger is a metaphor for how sport is bringing together under-represented nations and providing a platform for them.

The 2025 Outrigger Challenge Cup is the 2nd edition of the tournament, the 1st time it has been held outside of the Marshall Islands. The competing teams are the Marshall Islands, the US Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos Islands, and Ozark United Under 19’s.

In 2024, the inaugural Outrigger Challenge Cup took place in Majuro, RMI. The event format was futsal, and each competing nation had 2 teams; Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and Federated States of Micronesia. Kiribati beat Marshall Islands in the final.

In the future we aim for the Outrigger Challenge Cup to include all formats of soccer (11 aside, futsal, beach), and to include all of men’s, women’s, and youth.
